How to Backup Movable Type

You can create a complete backup of your Movable Type web site in just a few quick steps. This is the process you should use to to make a complete copy of your site's files and database so that you have everything you to restore your site from scratch.

Since Movable Type is software that you install and run on a web server, the backup process is the same as for backing up any hosted site. You can get detailed step-by-step instructions on that page, just keep in mind:

  1. The top directory for MovableType is the one that contains the "mt.cgi" file. Your backup should start with everything in that directory, plus all of its subdirectories.
  2. The database settings are in the "mt-config.cgi" file.

You will need that information as you go through the process of creating your backup.

Another option is to just backup your posts following the steps for backing up TypePad. This will not give you a complete backup, but if you only care about the text of the posts, the process is a bit easier.
